Each year, nearly 1,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional school students with dependents enroll at UCLA. Many of these Bruins have children. Some are caring for their own parents. Still others have taken on the responsibility of raising a sibling. All of them are fulfilling the role of caregiver while navigating a full course load and all of life’s uncertainties.
Daniella S. ’25 was one such student. She completed her bachelor of arts degree in political science while providing care for her disabled younger brother. Watch the video to hear her story.
While Daniella’s personal circumstances may be unique, she and other Bruin caregivers share the experience of feeling supported in their journeys — and that is thanks to the Students with Dependents program and the generosity of the donors who help fund it.
For more than 15 years, the program has promoted academic success, professional growth, and general well-being of this group of students. Dedicated staff members serve as advocates and connect families to resources on and off campus such as career counseling, childcare providers and recreation opportunities. With support from donors, the program also builds community among students and families through activities such as family beach days, football nights and Little Bruin Wishes – an initiative that helps make the holidays more festive for many students and their loved ones.
